Smoking and Ulcerative Colitis: What’s the Link?

3Should You Smoke to Treat Ulcerative Colitis?

Although smoking may have some positive effects on ulcerative colitis, it is not a recommended treatment. This is because tobacco products contain hundreds of harmful substances that may cause damaging effects on your overall health. Studies have found that smoking is linked to heart disease, cancer, lung issues, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or diabetes. Even secondhand smokers may also be affected. That’s why it is better to avoid smoking or quit it immediately instead of considering smoking as a treatment for ulcerative colitis. [5]

Can Nicotine Patches Help With Ulcerative Colitis?

Scientists believe that the protective effect of smoking against ulcerative colitis mainly comes from nicotine. Therefore, it may be reasonable to use nicotine patches or similar products instead of using tobacco products directly. Certain studies have shown that nicotine products may help some people with ulcerative colitis improve their symptoms, even when they do not smoke. However, there are certain side effects to keep in mind, such as sleeping issues, headaches, tremors, dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, or pancreatitis. It is also necessary to know that not everyone may tolerate nicotine. [6]
