7Stroke and Brain Injury
A stroke happens when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts. As a result, it disrupts blood flow to this area, which causes damage to the tissue. The injury would change the brain’s electrical activity and result in a seizure. In most cases, a seizure tends to occur within 1 day after a stroke. However, a post-stroke seizure may first happen several months after the stroke. The risk is higher when a stroke is more serious. [7]
A brain injury can also be a cause of seizure in adults with no history. The seizures would happen immediately after the injury or within a few hours or days. It is estimated that around 50 percent of cases occur within the first day. The more serious the injuries are, the higher the risk can be. Certain factors may increase the risk of brain injury-related seizures, such as brain’s bleeding, contusion, excessive consumption of alcohol, and old age. [8]
