5Infection in the Central Nervous System
A severe infection in the central nervous system may be a possible cause of seizures. It would be triggered by viruses, parasites, or bacteria. All of these pathogens would infect the brain tissue and lead to an inflammatory or immune response. As a result, atypical changes occur and affect electrical activity in the brain. Some infections of the central nervous system that would cause seizures include neurocysticercosis, tuberculosis in the nervous system, encephalitis or meningitis, viral meningoencephalitis, cerebral toxoplasmosis, river blindness or onchocerciasis, cerebral malaria, as well as brain abscess.
