5Hysterectomy and Early Menopause
As said above, for women who have undergone a hysterectomy with an oophorectomy, the abrupt removal of ovaries will lead to a significant reduction in the levels of estrogen. This may stop menstruation and start early menopause. Age-related symptoms may happen, such as weight gain, irritability, mood swings, sleeping issues, vaginal dryness, night sweats, hot flashes, dry skin, hair loss, faster heart rate, bone loss, as well as incontinence. In addition, studies have shown that these individuals are more prone to cognitive impairment, such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia. [5]
