Another way to dissolve a blood clot caused by a pulmonary embolism in an artery or a vein is catheter-directed thrombolysis. During the procedure, your doctor will insert a catheter into the vein or artery, then take some images to locate the clot. The next step is to use some specialized devices or medication to break up this blockage. It is a safe technique that requires minimal invasion. However, sedation is needed to make you feel more comfortable. The catheter is removed only when the clot has been successfully dissolved. [8]
