4How Psoriasis and Psychological Effects Are Linked
Mental health and psoriasis are interconnected. However, there is currently no definitive and clear evidence that explains precisely the underlying mechanism. Scientists have suggested different reasons for this. For instance, a study has implicated that anxiety may occur due to psoriasis symptoms, the appearance of red spots on the skin, lack of support, and associated stigma. Worrying about the disease may also lead to stress, which worsens psoriasis symptoms and causes flare-ups. Appearance and stigma associated with psoriasis may increase the risk of depression as well. In some situations, psychological effects would become worse when individuals with psoriasis cannot participate in social or recreational activities due to pain or stigma.
The link is also biological. For instance, psoriasis and depression are both linked to high numbers of proteins called pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-1B, and TNF. They stimulate the immune response in the body. As a result, the inflammation would play a part in both conditions with different assumptions explaining the link. [4]
