4Prolymphocytic Leukemia Diagnosis
Since prolymphocytic leukemia is rare, it may be challenging to diagnose the condition. Sometimes, this form of cancer develops from existing leukemia and can be found during a lab test. The condition is diagnosed when prolymphocytes account for more than 55 percent of blood lymphocytes. Some blood tests can help look for antigens or antibodies that indicate prolymphocytic leukemia as well. Otherwise, the doctor may suggest further tests:
– Imaging techniques, such as PET or CT scans may look for an enlarged spleen or liver
– Bone marrow biopsy: This procedure involves the inserting of a needle into the bone for a bone marrow sample, which is analyzed for prolymphocytes. [5]
