12Other Risk Factors
In addition to these mentioned causes, there are many other risk factors for polymyalgia rheumatica. Firstly, the condition mostly occurs in older people, often from 70 to 80 years old. It is relatively rare in younger groups that are under 50 years old. This is because the aging process makes their immune systems weaker, which makes it easier for viruses to penetrate and infect the immune system. When it comes to gender, women are approximately 2 to 3 times more likely to develop the condition. In addition, polymyalgia rheumatica is more common in white communities whose ancestors were originally from northern Europe or Scandinavia. It is almost impossible to prevent all of these risk factors. Therefore, having a regular health check is important to find out any early symptoms and seek proper treatment options.
