If left untreated, pleural effusions would be fatal and severe. Many causes require hospitalization or even surgery to prevent complications. Depending on the severity of the condition, size, underlying cause, and your health, recovery time can vary. Your doctor will prescribe suitable medication and provide supportive care to speed up recovery. During the first few days after being discharged from the hospital, you would experience weakness and tiredness. The incision areas from the surgery will typically heal in 2 to 4 weeks. During this period, you still need follow-up and care from other family members at home.[12]
