9Ovarian Cancer
In most cases, ovarian cysts are harmless and noncancerous. However, they can also be a sign of ovarian cancer. This is especially true for many ovarian cystadenomas, a type developing from cells on the surface of the ovary. Like noncancerous counterparts, cancerous cysts often cause minor or even no symptoms at first. They are usually hard to feel or diagnose during a physical exam. Thus, it can be challenging for healthcare providers to detect ovarian cancer at the early stages. To reduce the risk, some women are recommended to take birth control pills. They work by preventing ovulation and suppressing ovarian function. [9]
