Both neuromyelitis optica and multiple sclerosis are incurable at the current time. Also, there is no method to predict who will develop which disorders. Nevertheless, there are many treatment options that could help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Since neuromyelitis optica tends to recur after the initial episode, doctors often prescribe medications to help suppress the immune system. Before starting, some randomized clinical trials can be used to measure the safety and efficacy of different immunotherapies. For multiple sclerosis, the main effects of drugs are to reduce flare-ups and treat the triggers of the condition. During an attack, both conditions can be treated with plasma exchange and corticosteroids. [9.1] [9.2]
