Onycholysis happens when nails lift from the finger bed and cause a white mark under. This would cause a gap between the two parts, causing the nails to turn yellow or white. When the gap becomes bigger and extends downward, the nails would be more susceptible to infections. The affected nails may turn gray, white, purple, or yellow. While you may notice this problem with rheumatoid arthritis, it is mostly associated with another form of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis. The condition would last for a few months since a toenail or fingernail will not reattach to the nail bed. Symptoms only improve when new nails grow to replace the old ones. [5]
