Life expectancy can be a bit different in various forms of multiple sclerosis. Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis is the most common type. After initial symptoms, a relapse would occur one time per year or even more frequently. But between these flares, there would be no symptoms. The average life expectancy for people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis is approximately 77.8 years. This form would eventually develop into secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, which causes alternating periods of recovery and flares. However, symptoms still become worse steadily. For primary progressive multiple sclerosis, the average life expectancy is approximately 71.4 years. [5]
