3Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy

People with multiple myeloma tend to have an excess number of plasma cells in their bone marrow. Therefore, a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy can be used to examine this part of the body. It could either be performed at the hospital or at the office of a doctor. During this process, a small part of your bone marrow would be removed and checked under the microscope. A general anesthetic might be needed. This sample can be used for many tests, such as FISH, conventional cytogenetics, or immunophenotyping. The results will show essential information about the markers, malignancy, and possible treatments. [3]
