Relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis is the most common form of multiple sclerosis. Around 80 percent of those with multiple sclerosis have this type. It is characterized by alternating periods of relapses when symptoms become worse significantly and periods of remissions when symptoms completely go away or decrease. Therefore, the majority of MS patients may expect to have relapses somewhere during their lifetime. Keep in mind that the changes caused by a relapse might not disappear in some individuals. They would become their new normal. Those with primary progressive or secondary progressive multiple sclerosis may also have relapses, but the frequency is much lower. [3]
