11Treatment Options for MS Relapses
The most common treatment for a MS relapse is a high dose of steroids, typically methylprednisolone. The medication can help alleviate inflammation and improve the symptoms. This treatment should be used in the short term for severe symptoms. An example treatment may be as follow:
– 3 to 4 days of high-dose steroids injected intravenously or taken orally
– 3 to 4 weeks of small-dose steroids taken orally
If steroids do not work as expected, your doctor may suggest immunoabsorption or therapeutic plasma exchange. These are medical procedures that get rid of and replace antibodies in the blood with filtered plasma. [11]
