Staph bacteria can be found naturally in the nose or skin of many people. They tend to be harmless unless they penetrate the body through a wound. It is estimated that about 5 percent of the population carries a strain of staph bacteria called MRSA. This can be the result of the unnecessary use of antibiotics for a long period. People often take these medications to treat flu, colds, and other viral infections. However, this would lead to drug-resistant bacteria over time. This is the case with an MRSA infection as staph bacteria would survive and resist antibiotics to penetrate the body. [4]
