Scientists do not know exactly what may cause mermaid syndrome. Therefore, there are no definitive methods to prevent this disorder. Doctors may advise any of the following measures to help lower the risk of developing the disorder in babies:
– Maintain stable levels of blood sugar, particularly during the first three months
– Avoid a direct exposure to retinoic acid, cocaine, lithium, or cigarettes
– Reduce the consumption of alcohol
– Do genetic testing to identify any possible risk with your babies [7]
Although mermaid syndrome is extremely rare, it is typically severe and fatal. The condition may cause other organ abnormalities, such as those of the lungs, kidneys, and heart, which can be life-threatening in newborn babies. Most cases are often still born or die after several days of birth, in spite of treatment. Only several babies may survive beyond the early stage of life. Nevertheless, when mermaid syndrome only impacts the lower limbs and not other areas of the body, particularly the kidneys, it is possible for the babies to live for a longer period. Since the condition can be diagnosed as early as 13 weeks of pregnancy, some parents may decide to terminate the pregnancy in these situations. [8]
