When it comes to malaria, the biggest risk factor might be traveling or to or living in tropical areas where the infections are common. These regions include most of Africa around the Sahara Desert, Asian subcontinent, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Haiti. In fact, it is estimated that up to 90 percent of all deaths causing by malaria happen in Africa, mostly in children younger than 5 years old. In developed countries, most cases of malaria come from returned travelers from these mentioned areas. [5]
