Individuals with HIV or other diseases that compromise the immune system would lose some of the natural capabilities of keeping virus or bacterial in check. Normally, these microorganisms exist in the body but are controlled at a reasonable level by the immune system. When a disease affects the immune system, bacteria and virus may develop uncontrollably and lead to conditions like linear gingival erythema. Scientists have found that this disease is associated with a form of yeast called candidiasis, which is also a cause of other conditions, such as yeast infections or oral thrush. When yeasts grow and affect healthy tissues, they may cause itching, pain, and other symptoms. [5]
