Crunching noises in the knees can also be an indication of discomfort or pain in this part. It would be caused by stretched ligaments or tendons when you work out excessively. However, noisy joints tend to be more common in old people as the cartilage gradually wears as a part of the aging process. This makes bony surfaces of the knee rub against each other. If the sounds are followed by painful sensations, it might indicate a torn or damaged knee ligament due to sudden twists.
