5Toxic Megacolon
Another fatal complication of Crohn’s disease is toxic megacolon. This rare condition is also common in people with ulcerative colitis. It happens when inflammation leads to the expansion of the colon to a degree that it cannot contract anymore. As a result, gas may build up and trigger a bursting colon. This may cause harmful toxins and bacteria to leak into the blood stream. Toxic megacolon would eventually result other fatal problems, such as shock, sepsis, and internal bleeding. It is important to learn how to recognize typical symptoms and seek prompt medical attention to lower the risk. Common signs of toxic megacolon may include a fever, a faster heart rate, dehydration, bloody or frequent diarrhea, as well as abdominal pain and swelling. [5]
