5Treatment Options for Intractable Epilepsy
Drug Changes
In general, the goal of treatment for both epilepsy and intractable epilepsy is to manage symptoms of seizures. The first option that a doctor may suggest you change to another type of antiepilepsy drugs. Common options include lacosamide, topiramate, oxcarbazepine, leveriracetam, zonisamide, lamotrigine, or gabapentin. If your symptoms do not improve after taking two antiepilepsy drugs, it is likely that another one in the group may not be effective as well. This would be due to how the body or the brain interacts with antiepilepsy drugs. In these cases, you may take a different class of medications to manage seizures or try other treatment options.
