The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has currently approved checkpoint inhibitors as the only form of immunotherapy drug for treating small cell lung cancer. In general, many cells in the immune system have special proteins called checkpoints. They work by activating an immune response to prevent the body from accidently targeting and killing healthy cells. Nevertheless, cancer cells may also depend on these checkpoints to hide from the immune system. As a result, this would reduce or inhibit the immune response to cancerous cells. Checkpoint inhibitors can help prevent this mechanism and thus allow white blood cells to kill cancerous cells. [3]
