If you are pregnant, it is better to avoid taking imatinib mesylate. Your doctor may prescribe a different option or advise you to wait until after the delivery. Some women have reported miscarriages and other harmful effects to the fetus during this period. Certain animal studies also show that pregnant women who took the medication may have a higher risk of birth defects.
