11Other Risk Factors
Aging can be a risk factor for hyponatremia because older people are more likely to suffer from any liver, kidney, and heart issues that are associated with lower levels of sodium. Also, they tend to take several medications and drugs that affect sodium balance. Another contributing factor is the consumption of alcohol and caffeine. These products can work as a mild diuretic and cause water retention. This dilutes electrolytes content and thus lower the levels of sodium in the body. While it is appropriate to drink alcohol and coffee or green tea regularly, you should avoid them completely when you are dealing with hyponatremia. [11]
