Direct exposure to ionizing radiation in radiation therapy can be a major risk factor for hyperparathyroidism. While the main purpose of the process is to remove tumors or cancer mass, it can also cause this medical condition as a side effect. In most cases, radiation-induced hyperparathyroidism often occurs in people with breast cancer or lymphoma. Those body parts that are at the highest risks include the head, chest, and neck. The same effects would also come from radioactive fallout from a nuclear disaster or nuclear testing. Though electronic devices would release radiation, the amount is too low to trigger hyperparathyroidism. [11]
