Hypercholesterolemia – Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

8Lifestyle Changes

People with hypercholesterolemia should make a few lifestyle changes to reduce the risk.

Firstly, try to keep an optimal body weight if you are obese or overweight. Weight loss may help reduce levels of cholesterol. You might need to reduce the portion size, avoid processed foods, and work out more frequently. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity on a daily basis. Avoid sitting too long for an extended period of time as it would increase the risk. Lastly, quit smoking as it may increase overall cholesterol levels. [9]

Long-Term Outlook

If left untreated, hypercholesterolemia may lead to serious risks in the long term. One of the major concerns is cardiovascular disease. Strokes and heart attacks are more prevalent in people with uncontrolled and high cholesterol levels. Also, when plaque builds on in the walls of blood vessels, it may disrupt blood flow to other parts of the body and cause many other complications. Therefore, make sure to inform your doctor as soon as you notice any unusual signs. [10]
