Hypercalcemia caused by overactive parathyroid glands or hyperparathyroidism can usually be treated by surgery. The main goal is to remove the affected tissues that are triggering the condition. In most cases, only one of four parathyroid glands has issues, so it is possible to proceed with a surgical procedure. To determine the exact part for removal, your doctor might take a scanning test with radioactive materials. Depending on the level of damage and severity, there will be different techniques to choose from. [13]
