A hiatal hernia is basically not a genetic condition. However, some hereditary conditions would increase the risk. The most common risk factor is Ehlers Danlos syndrome. It is a connective tissue disease with a range of clinical manifestations, such as overly flexible joints or bruising. A hiatal hernia can be present in people with this syndrome. There are 6 different forms of Ehlers Danlos syndrome, including dermatosparaxis, arthrochalasia, kyphoscoliosis, vascular classical, and hypermobility. If your parents or close relatives have this condition, then you are more likely to develop it or hiatal hernia. While it is possible to prevent, you can have genetic testing or have your health checked regularly to detect the symptoms early. [10]
