3Mother-Infant Transmission

Around 1 out of 10 babies born to mothers with hepatitis C would be infected with this condition. This is also known as a vertical spread. If the mother has a high viral load or has HIV, then the risk would almost double during the delivery. In addition, extended rupture of the membranes during delivery can be related to a higher possibility of mother-to-infant transmission of hepatitis C virus. Many studies have shown that all babies born with this condition have viral antibodies. However, not all of them are infected. As for breastfeeding, there is still no evidence suggesting the risk of hepatitis C transmission through this activity. [3]
