4Swallowed Air
Though it sounds ridiculous, swallowed air is indeed one of the causes of bloating. Some lifestyle habits like eating too fast, drinking through a straw, sucking on hard candies, chewing gums, and smoking can increase the likelihood of swallowing air and contribute to stomach bloating. Aerophagia will develop when a large amount of air accumulates in the digestive tract. Apart from bloating, people will also experience frequent belching and belly pain.
There is no medication or surgery to treat aerophagia yet. The best approach is to change behaviors that cause you to gulp more air. These include:
- Avoid chewing gums
- Quit smoking
- Take your time to eat and drink [4]
