Embolism vs. Aneurysm – Differences and Similarities

7Differences in Treatment

Treatment for an aneurysm mainly depends on the type and location of an aneurysm. When it affects a vessel in the abdomen or chest, endovascular stent graft may be used. This is a minimally invasive surgery that helps repair damage in blood vessels and reduce the risk of scarring and infection. Other treatment options include medications for high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. You doctor would also prescribe beta-blockers to reduce blood pressure, which prevents further complications due to a ruptured aneurysm. [8]

Like aneurysms, embolisms may be treated in different ways, depending on the underlying cause, affected areas, and the blockage’s size. To remove the blockage, an embolectomy is typically used. In this surgical procedure, a cut will be made in the artery before the blockage is sucked out. Your doctor may also prescribe medications to dissolve embolisms. For instance, low-dose aspirin, heparin, and warfarin, may reduce the stickiness of blood and prevent the forming of blood clots. If an embolism occurs due to air bubbles, it may be treated with a hyperbaric chamber, which has higher pressure in the air to minimize the size of bubbles in the body. [9]
