5Related Conditions with Ecchymosis
Apart from ecchymosis, there are 2 other forms of bleeding into the skin. Based on the severity, location, and size of the spot, you might determine which kind of bleeding. These two forms include:
– Petechiae
Petechiae are characterized by very small spots on the skin. They can be brown, red, or purple in color and can be triggered by small blood vessels called burst capillaries. The main causes include an underlying medical condition or the result of taking a medication. Petechiae often show up in groups.
– Purpura
Purpuras are dark purple patches or spots on the skin with a diameter from 4 to 10 mm. Compared to ecchymosis, they look more like a rash instead of a bruise. The main causes of purpura include blood clotting issues, medications, or infection. [5]
