5Abnormal Responses to Sensory Feedback
While many babies enjoy kisses and cuddles from their parents, these can be distressing or uncomfortable for those with autism. In general, autistic children might cry easily, difficult to soothe, and seem fussy. They also resist some common sensory inputs, such as kisses or hugs. Noisy and chaotic areas can make them feel overwhelmed easily as well. On the other hand, a few autistic babies can be under-sensitive to sensory feedback. For example, they do not respond to painful stimuli when vaccinating, loud noises, or extreme temperatures. They would deliberately crash into objects or only eat crunchy and spicy foods.
