4Topiramate
Topiramate is a second-line medication for treating Dravet syndrome. It belongs to a class of drugs called antiepileptic medications that work by targeting certain seizure-linked activities in the brain. Clinical trials have shown that many people who took this drug experienced fewer attacks and even became seizure-free in the short term. Common side effects of topiramate include kidney stones, metabolic acidosis, lower appetite, drowsiness, and verbal issues. [5]
Rescue Medications
All of the medications mentioned above are called maintenance medications. Your doctor would also prescribe a rescue medication along with these drugs. They may help stop a cluster of seizures or a persistent seizure after it begins. In children, Dravet syndrome does not only cause frequent attacks, but also persistent seizures. Taking rescue medications is a good way to prevent these problems. Common options include midazolam, lorazepam, diazepam, as well as clonazepam. [6]
