Since dyskinesia may be caused by long-term use of levodopa, your doctor may ask prescribe another drug to manage the symptom. However, it would increase the risk of Parkinson’s tremors during the period before the next dosage. Deep brain stimulation can also be an effective treatment for dyskinesia in those with Parkinson’s disease. Your healthcare provider may prescribe dopamine agonists, which work by mimicking the effects of dopamine when the levels of this neurotransmitter in the body are low. Another medication for treating dyskinesia is amantadine. Studies have shown that it may help reduce the symptoms of dyskinesia in Parkinson’s disease. However, there would be certain side effects, such as impulsive behaviors, hallucinations, or paranoia. [7]
