Diabetes Stages – What You Need to Know

2Types of Diabetes

Diabetes can be divided into three main types:

– Type 1 diabetes: This form is caused by an autoimmune response when the body mistakenly attacks healthy cells. This affects the production of insulin. Around 5 to 10 percent of diabetes have type 1. Symptoms tend to occur quickly in children, teenagers, and young adults. People with type 1 diabetes have to take insulin daily.

– Type 2 diabetes: In people with this form, the body cannot produce insulin properly and cannot keep blood sugar levels stable. Around 90 to 95 percent of reported cases have type 2. It tends to progress over time and is often diagnosed in adults. There may be no clear symptoms, so it is necessary to take blood tests regularly if you are at risk. Some lifestyle changes can help delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.

– Gestational diabetes: This type of diabetes occurs in pregnant women with a history of diabetes. It may increase the risk of some health issues in the babies later. In most cases, gestational diabetes disappears after the delivery, but it may make you more prone to type 2 diabetes. [2]
