7Dermatomyositis Diagnosis
One or more of the following diagnostic tests can help diagnose dermatomyositis:
– Electromyography: This procedure involves inserting a thin needle electrode into the tested muscle. While you are tightening or relaxing the muscle, it will measure electrical activity to look for a muscle issue.
– Blood analysis: A blood test can determine whether you have increased muscle enzyme levels, which would suggest muscle damage. It also helps find out autoantibodies linked to other signs. The results are helpful in determining proper treatment options and medications.
– Chest X-ray: This is an imaging technique that can look for signs of lung damage caused by dermatomyositis.
– Muscle or skin biopsy: This test removes a small skin piece for testing in the lab. The results would suggest the presence of inflammation, infections, or damage caused by the condition. [7]
