Depression During and After Pregnancy: Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

4Causes of Postnatal Depression

Generally speaking, women are more sentimental than men. And giving birth can help amplify these emotions and make women more susceptible to postnatal depression. Indeed, a majority of first-timer moms do feel overwhelmed and challenged after having a newborn baby. They will also experience indescribable anxiety, restlessness, sadness, irritability, and impatience, to varying degrees. These are typical signs of Baby Blues and normally last for two weeks at maximum. However, if people have the Baby Blues symptoms persist longer or start later, it can be a possibility of having postnatal depression.

The exact causes of postnatal depression are still unknown. Scientists believe hormone changes and stressful events can be possible triggers. People in the following situation will have a higher incidence of postnatal depression.

  • History of mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc.
  • Family history of postnatal depression
  • Inharmonious husband-wife relationship
  • Suffer from domestic violence
  • No friends or family to talk with
  • Financial crisis
  • Bereavement [4]
