CT Scans for Pulmonary Embolism

7Other Diagnostic Tests for Pulmonary Embolism

In addition to a CT scan, some other tests can be used to verify the presence of a pulmonary embolism. These include:

– A MRI scan can identify differences in tissues with the help of magnetic fields. The results can be quite precise. However, it is not available in all cases, especially for those with metal in the body. The duration is also longer compared to a CT scan.

– An X-ray on the chest can help eliminate other possible causes of chest pain, such as pulmonary edema, pneumothorax, or pneumonia.

– Ultrasound is a diagnostic test that can produce pictures of veins in your legs to find blood clots. It is painless and completely free of radiation. The results do not diagnose the condition, but it may show whether you are at a higher risk of the condition.

– Transthoracic echocardiogram measures the functioning of the heart by using ultrasound. The results may help suggest the presence of a pulmonary embolism.

These diagnostic tests are suggested when you cannot undergo a CT scan due to kidney issues, pregnancy, or allergic reactions to contrast dye. [7]
