5Other Risk Factors
In addition to these main causes, some other risk factors would restrict blood flow to your heart and cause coronary heart disease. Most of them are linked to atherosclerosis, including aneurysm, embolism, spontaneous coronary artery dissection, and artery vasculitis. Frequent consumption of illicit drugs, especially amphetamines and cocaine, would also lead to a higher risk for stroke, heart attack, heart failure, or high blood pressure.
The risk of coronary heart disease tends to increase with age because plaque can build up gradually. Most cases happen in men over 45 or women over 55 years old. When it comes to ethnicity, the condition is more common in some groups, such as Pacific Islanders, Asian-Americans, Alaska Natives, and American Indians. [5]
