COPD can be a hereditary condition. This means that parents can pass down some special genes which are predisposed to COPD to their children. However, this is a quite rare cause that only occurs in 1% to 3% of reported cases. To reduce the risk, it is important to have annual health checks to find out any possible symptoms if your parents or siblings are suffering from this disorder. Even when you are a smoker, this would also increase the possibility of transmitting COPD genes to your next generations. [6]
