Contracture Deformity – Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

3Common Causes of Contracture Deformity

Scarring from a burn or an injury and inactivity are the two most common causes of a contracture deformity. Also, those people who have conditions or disorders that prevent them from moving around might be at a higher risk of developing this health issue as well. For instance, people with serious rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis are usually more prone to contractures. As they are not able to move the joints and muscles through the typical range of motion, those tissues can be at risk of tightening.

For instance, contracture deformity of the joints is prevalent in those people who are discharged after long stays in the hospital or from intensive care units. Also, it is very common in people after paralysis or a stroke. In addition to these common causes, the disease can be triggered by some conditions, which develop in early childhood or are inherited. These include:

– Cerebral palsy: This condition leads to limited movement and muscle tightness

– Muscular dystrophy: The disease typically causes muscle tightness as considerable muscle weakness affects the ability to move

– Inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, may increase the risk of contracture deformity

– Central nervous system issues, such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, as well as polio [3]
