Common Facts about Hepatitis A

6Prevention

Maintaining proper hygiene, consuming safe water and food, and obtaining immunization are important ways of preventing the spread of the disease. Over the years, the administering of immunoglobulins has worked in raising immunity against the virus. Recently, several vaccines have been developed to improve immunity. Most people become immune to the Hepatitis A virus within the first month of vaccination. Vaccines are highly effective and can be active for more than 20 years after injection. Children less than one year of age should not be given vaccination. Vaccination is recommended for people who may be exposed to risks of contracting the virus, for example, travelers to countries with high risk, or people with a family member who may be having the infection.
