In more severe cases of venous insufficiency, open sores or skin ulcers would occur on the lower areas of the legs, typically around the ankles. They are also known as venous stasis ulcers. The main cause is the increasing swelling and blood pressure to an area where small blood vessels are damaged or burst, which results in a blood leakage.
