5What Happens During Cataract Surgery?

The first step in cataract surgery is to dilate your pupil with eye drops or a mild sedative. The skin around the eyelid and eye will be sterilized and cleaned. Next, a sterile drape would be put around the eyes and over the head. Most cataract surgery can be done with minimal anesthesia.

To start the surgery, your doctor will make tiny incisions in the peripheral area of the cornea. After that, the lens bag or capsule would be opened to insert a small ultrasonic probe. This device would help dissolve cataracts at very high rates of speed and suction out the remaining materials. A clear, new lens implant would then be inserted to your eye via the same incision, which would be self-sealing without stitches. [5]
