2How Is HPV Spread?

HPV may be passed from person to person through oral, anal, and vaginal sex with someone who is carrying the virus. Anal or vaginal sex is the most common way of spreading the infection. In addition, HPV may spread through close skin-to-skin contact during sexual intercourse. Even when a person with the virus does not show any signs, he or she can still pass the infection to other people. For these reasons, HPV is more common in sexually active individuals. Since symptoms may develop years after the contraction, it can be challenging to know exactly when you get the virus. [2]
