Calcinosis Cutis – Everything You Need to Know

4Symptoms of Calcinosis Cutis Subtypes

Symptoms of each calcinosis cutis subtype can vary:

– Dystrophic calcification: The spots happen in the damaged tissue. Mostly affected areas include knees, fingers, elbows, and forearms. In those with lupus, affected parts include the buttocks, feet, hands, and under the lesions.

– Idiopathic calcification: This form typically only affects one body area. It can happen around major joints, feet, and hands, the vulva, the penis, the breasts, the head, or the scrotum. It would even show up on the face of children. The spots can be characterized by a white discharge.

– Metastatic calcification: People with this form have bumps that are located symmetrically around major joints, such as shoulders, elbows, or knees. They can also show up around internal body organs like the stomach, blood vessels, kidneys, and lungs. These spots would restrict mobility when the skin becomes hardened.

– Calciphylaxis: Lesions often show up on the skin of the trunk or legs, particularly the fatty parts like the stomach, buttocks, and breasts. They have a mottled look and can be painful. Other symptoms can follow, such as weakness and fatigue.

– Iatrogenic calcification: The spots show up in the area of a therapeutic or medical procedure that pierced your skin. [4]
