8Antibiotics
If you are dealing with severe symptoms of bronchiectasis due to bacterial infection, then antibiotics can help treat such infective exacerbation.
The first stage is to identify the type of bacteria responsible for the infection, which is known from a sample obtained from your phlegm. But before that, patients are initially treated with a broad spectrum antibiotic capable of fighting an odd number of different bacteria, as the test result may take a while.
With the test results, you may be prescribed another antibiotic or a combination of antibiotics that have proven to be effective against such bacteria causing the patient’s infection.
For patients well enough to have their treatment at home, you may be prescribed about 2 or 3 antibiotic pills daily for 10 – 14 days.
It’s paramount that you complete the course, whether you feel better or not, as an incomplete course may leading to rapid recurring of the infection.
But, for those with severe symptoms, you may be admitted to the hospital for antibiotic injection treatment. [8]
